Author of more than 80 scientific papers and technical reports, Dr Newman is serving a second 3-year term as a member of the Board of Associate Editors of the international peer-reviewed journal Aviation Space and Environmental Medicine, is a Consulting Editor for the International Journal of Applied Aviation Studies, and is a reviewer for a number of scientific journals, including;
He has also been a frequent contributor to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority's magazine Flight Safety Australia. |
| A member of numerous academic, scientific and professional associations, he has accepted numerous invitations to lecture and give presentations in aviation medicine and physiology at a variety of national and international conferences. He was the Chairman of the 2001 International Acceleration Research Workshop, which was held in Reno, Nevada, and the 2008 International Acceleration Research Workshop, held in Boston. He was also the Chairman of the Scientific Program Committee for the 2002 International Congress of Aviation & Space Medicine. He is also a member of the Science and Technology Committee of the Aerospace Medical Association. |

He is a Presiding Councillor of the Specialist Medical Review Council, appointed by the Commonwealth Government Minister for Veterans' Affairs. He is also a member of the SMRC Executive. Dr Newman is also currently serving as the Chairman of the Human Research Ethics Committee of the University of Ballarat, in regional Victoria. He is also the Director of the Office for Research at Western Health, which is the major public provider of acute health services throughout western metropolitan Melbourne. In the private sector, he is the Chairman of Fidalas November Pty Ltd, a private investment and wealth management firm, and the Chairman of Insight Acumen, a private Australian professional services company engaged in decision support, operations analysis, modelling and simulation. An active private pilot, Dr Newman has flown a wide variety of fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft, including some 150 hours in such high performance fighters as the F/A-18 Hornet, the Hawk and the Harrier. |
